OUR ETHOS

The Colombo Chetties have been identified as a distinct ethnic group in Sri Lanka and contributes to various aspects of Sri Lankan society, particularly in the professions and in commerce.

The Chetty Community prides itself in its ability to live in perfect harmony with all ethnic groups in Sri Lanka. This has resulted in close affinity and mutual respect between the Chetties and the Sinhalese, Tamil, Muslim and Burgher communities. In fact there are many instances of intermarriage and integration with these communities.

Chetties are of multiple religious beliefs. The majority is Catholic but some are Buddhist and Hindu. In fact the famous monk Soma Thera was of Chetty origin.

They have made a great contribution to the socio-economic development of Sri Lanka by qualifying as doctors, lawyers, accountants and other professionals of the highest caliber. Many were also pioneers in the fields of banking, commerce and import and export business.

Whilst taking their work seriously, community members excel in sports and in the arts and literature. They also appreciate the simple pleasures of singing, dancing, good food and drink and light hearted revelry.
